HAWAIIAN HOMEOWNERSHIP

Hawaiian Community Assets, Inc. (HCA) provides a comprehensive program of services designed to help families become and remain homeowners.

Home Buyer Education Workshops
Workshops provide homeownership training that reflects Hawaiian and local culture and values. This eight-hour course, called Kahua Waiwai (Foundation for Wealth), utilizes the Realizing the American Dream curriculum, a NeighborWorks program widely used throughout the United States. Topics include:
  • Are you ready to buy a home
  • Managing Your Money
  • Understanding Credit
  • Getting a Mortgage Loan
  • Shopping for a Home
  • Keeping Your Home and Managing Your Finances

Our workshops are provided at no cost to the participant and meet basic U.S. government standards for home buyer education. Our instructors have been certified by NeighborWorks America, the national certification agency for homeownership training and counseling.

See our Events page for more about our free workshops.

Basic Financial Management Workshops are available to groups by special arrangement. Our trainers for this course are certified by First Nations Development Institute.

Individualized Financial Assessments help our clients determine their financial readiness for homeownership.

One-on-One Counseling is available to those clients who need individualized assistance to reduce debt, repair their credit record, or save money for down payment and closing costs. All our counselors have been trained by NeighborWorks America, the national certification agency for homeownership training and counseling.

Access to residential construction loans and mortgages through its own mortgage broker arm, Hawai`i Community Lending (HCL). HCL, a HUD-certified mortgage broker, has access to a wide variety of loan programs for construction, purchase or refinance. HCL lends throughout Hawaii, but specializes in lending programs for Hawaiian Home Lands.

Down Payment Assistance and Individual Development Accounts (IDA's) are sometimes available. HCA can refer a client to providers with whom they may qualify for financial assistance. HCA provides its own down payment assistance program funded by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, utilizing federal funds from the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) which is administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
